Well, I gave my nephew and brother-in-law their first Kendo lesson on Saturday afternoon. It was a lot of fun (been a long time since I got to wear my bogu), and they did pretty well for their first time. My nephew needs to practice some and get used to the weight of the Shinai, but I think that he’ll do just fine with it in the long run. Hopefully we’ll have our next lesson some time this week. Anyway, I have a story challenge, and it’s time for my favorite story challenge. I’m going to give you a series of criteria including genre, theme, some character archetypes, etc. Your job is to write a story that includes all of the features required in the challenge. If you intend to post it here, please keep it short. However, the complexity of this challenge often requires a longer story.

Theme: Sportsmanship

Genre: Fantasy, Surreal Fantasy

Setting: Your setting is a large sporting event of some kind. This could be gladiatorial combat, some kind of physical games (such as races, jousts, wrestling, etc), something more magically focused (like Quidditch in Harry Potter), or even an intellectual game (perhaps some kind of popular academic debate).

Character Archetypes:

1) The Champion

2) The Mystery Challenger

3) The Chronic Runner-Up

4) The Fan

1) A tool of the game (i.e. a ball, club, magical implement, debate question, etc)

2) A Leg of Mutton

3) A Prize (i.e. gold coins, a slave, a magical item, etc)
