There are times when life is good, times when life is bad, times when life is frustrating, and then there are those times when life just doesn’t make sense. It’s not that things are necessarily good or bad, just that whatever they are doesn’t seem to be what they should be. Perhaps you got a $2000 check in the mail from someone you don’t know, or a $2000 bill. Perhaps a scholarship fell into your lap, or you got fired from your job for no reason. Perhaps you found out that your child is a genius even though your family is generally of moderate intelligence, or that your child has cancer, even though there’s no history of it on either side. Good, bad, or middling, there are some things that just leave you scratching your head. Today, I want you to tap into this same concept. So, this is what I want you to write about today: ‘that just doesn’t follow’. You know the rules. Take your subject and run with it. Write me a story of 1000 words or less and stay on topic. As before, if it’s in any way applicable, you should use this to try to develop your world a little more :).
Your Challenge: Write me a story about nonsensicality. This could be a story that seeks to express the fear that can accompany life’s randomness, or about the joy of an unforeseen boon. You could focus on describing the immediate sensation of shock, confusion, and either joy, grief, or anger (or possibly a mix of two or three), or the long-term life-shaping impact of seemingly random events. In some way though, your story needs to have a strong focus on this concept.
